Title : Ethics of energy equity and human security

Abstract:

Any new technology brings with it inherent benefits as well as more overt ethical concerns when it becomes operative in the society in the short or long run. The emergence of AI and Data Science require the maximum power consumed compared to the older technologies. Hence energy generation is an inevitable additional burden on the already existing grids under energy crisis. Energy generation supports economic growth and a higher standard of living. At the same time it also has financial and environmental costs. Energy equity focuses on fair distribution, ensuring low-income communities benefit from modern, renewable energy without disproportionate costs. Unlike traditional state-centric energy security, this approach ensures individuals have access to energy for health and livelihoods. Energy equity and human security are inextricably linked to the global shift toward sustainable, decentralized, and equitable energy systems that support, rather than exploit, local communities.

  • How do we reconcile the disproportionate consumption of energy by developed countries with increasing demand for energy in developing countries?
  •  Is it fair for rich countries to encourage developing countries to limit their energy consumption and shun luxury lifestyles?
  • What are the ways for developing countries to access the technology and expertise that permits more efficient energy generation in the developed world?
  • At the social level, should governments provide concessions to make energy more affordable and accessible for lower-income people as a fair justice?
  • Will subsidies for energy run the risk of subsidizing inefficient use of energy?
