Abstract:

The transition toward a more resilient, affordable, and sustainable global energy system requires not only technological innovation but also reliable transportation infrastructure capable of ensuring uninterrupted energy flows. Among the world's strategic maritime corridors, the Suez Canal has become an indispensable component of the international energy supply chain, facilitating the movement of crude oil, refined petroleum products, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and emerging low-carbon energy carriers between production and consumption regions.

This presentation examines how the Suez Canal contributes to strengthening global energy security under an increasingly complex geopolitical environment characterized by regional conflicts, shipping disruptions, supply chain volatility, and evolving energy markets. The study evaluates the Canal's strategic role in maintaining trade continuity while reducing voyage distances, transportation costs, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions compared with alternative maritime routes.

Using a descriptive and analytical methodology supported by international energy statistics, maritime transport databases, and operational indicators, the research analyzes recent trends in global energy shipping and assesses the Canal's contribution to improving supply chain resilience during periods of market uncertainty. Particular attention is given to the Canal's expanding logistics ecosystem, digital transformation initiatives, navigational improvements, and integrated maritime services that enhance operational efficiency and support sustainable shipping.

The study further explores the Canal's future role in facilitating the transport of alternative fuels, including hydrogen derivatives, green ammonia, and other low-carbon energy commodities expected to become increasingly important in the global energy transition. It argues that strategic maritime corridors will remain fundamental enablers of energy security even as energy systems undergo rapid decarbonization.

The findings demonstrate that the Suez Canal is evolving beyond its traditional function as a transit passage into a strategic platform supporting resilient global energy networks, sustainable maritime transport, and international economic stability. The research concludes with policy recommendations aimed at strengthening cooperation between maritime authorities, energy stakeholders, and policymakers to maximize the contribution of strategic waterways to the future global energy system
