Advanced Biofuels

Advanced Biofuels

Advanced biofuels are produced from non-food feedstocks such as agricultural residues, forestry waste, algae, and municipal waste. Unlike first-generation biofuels, they avoid competition with food resources and offer improved sustainability. Advanced biofuels include cellulosic ethanol, bio-jet fuel, renewable diesel, and synthetic biofuels. These fuels have lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions and are suitable for aviation, shipping, and heavy transport. Advanced biofuel technologies require complex conversion processes and advanced catalysts. Continued research and policy support are essential to reduce costs and enable large-scale deployment. Advanced biofuels are critical for deep decarbonization of transport systems.
