Pumped Storage Hydropower

Pumped Storage Hydropower

Pumped storage hydropower is a large-scale energy storage technology that stores electricity by pumping water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir during periods of low demand. When demand increases, the stored water is released to generate electricity. This system provides grid stability, frequency regulation, and peak-load balancing. Pumped storage hydropower has high efficiency, long lifespan, and large storage capacity, making it essential for integrating renewable energy sources like wind and solar. Although site-specific and capital-intensive, pumped storage remains the most mature and widely deployed energy storage technology globally. It plays a crucial role in modern power systems and renewable energy transitions.
