Sector coupling energy refers to the integration of traditionally separate energy-consuming sectors—such as electricity, heating, cooling, transportation, and industry—into a unified energy system. This approach enables renewable electricity to be used beyond the power sector through electrification, hydrogen production, power-to-heat, and power-to-fuel technologies. Sector coupling improves system flexibility by allowing energy to be shifted across sectors based on demand and availability. It maximizes renewable energy utilization, reduces curtailment, and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Sector coupling is essential for deep decarbonization, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors like transport and heavy industry. Digital control systems, energy storage, and smart infrastructure are key enablers. By connecting energy sectors, sector coupling supports efficient energy transitions and net-zero energy strategies.
